SUPPORT FOR PWD's IS LACKING IN BC
What is the most important part of living in a democratic country for disabled people? Participating in discussions when they affect you. However, PWDs are often unable to join like others and need strong advocates. Their voices go unnoticed and unheard. Who are the disability advocates in BC and how effective are they? While the former BC Liberals did do a great deal while in office it is a bit of a mixed bag in the case of the other political party in British Columbia. They did make bigger changes to the system, but I'm not sure how necessary the changes were that they made
The liberals did create the annual earnings exemption for employment income but the limit could be reached in six months of part-time work. It should have been much higher. The NDP did improve it...though it is still way too low.
A person on disability assistance should at least be able to afford a roof over their head up until the late2010s that low bar was possible but since the start of the Pandemic...even that has become an unattainable dream.
On May 29, 2025, there was a rally at the BC legislature in Victoria to convince the provincial government to raise the rates by a significant margin. I heard about this event through a podcast I watch on YouTube sometimes called PWD Allies. Even if you could not have made it over to the island, you could have participated online.
